2009 Annual Radar Detector Test-New Technologies

FIELD EVALUATION REPORT on laser jammer tests

Evaluated Product: Laser Blinder M27, M47 laser jammer, Cheetah M27 Motorcycle laser jammer

Evaluation Date: June, 2009.

Evaluation Location: Stan Roberts Senior Road, El Paso, TX.

Evaluation: 1stRadarDetectors, John Turner and Speed Measurement Labs, Carl Fors, President

Nine of the leading laser guns were used in the SML 2009 test, including:

Kustom Pro Laser II, 200 pps

Kustom Pro Laser III, 200 pps

Kustom ProLite+, 200 pps

Kustom ProLite, 200 pps

LTI TruSpeed, 200.3 pps

LTI 20/20, 125pps

LTI Ultralyte LR, 100pps

Laser Atlanta SpeedLaser, 238pps in Normal mode, 68pps in Stealth mode

Stalker LZ-1, 130 pps

Laser guns transmit pulses of infrared light at different pulse rates per second, pps, or PRF, pulse repetition frequency. Of the 162 passes on these 9 laser guns, the Blinder M47, Blinder M27 and Cheetah M27 motorcycle laser jammer jammed the laser gun each pass. There are two guns in Europe frequently used in Europe, but were not available at Speed Measurement Labs. Blinder Denmark has tested against the two Traffipatrol laser guns with Jam to Gun, test results.

Euro Robot Traffipatrol, 100pps

Euro Robot Traffipatrol XR, 3000 to 4000 pps)

Laser guns present two problems to you and your driving record. Most radar detectors can’t notify you of a laser encounter. First, if you do get a warning, consider it as an invitation to appear in court on a speeding ticket. The reason for this is the laser beam is a pointing tool. When a policeman aims a laser gun at a vehicle, the license plate, headlight or grille can be targeted with ease. Even if your vehicle is among 5 other vehicles, it is easy to target your vehicle among other vehicles. If you get a laser alert, it is because the laser is pointing at your vehicle. Slowing down after you receive a laser detection alert does you no good, because the laser gun already has your speed. In most cases, you may have the best radar detector in the world, and it still would not detect the laser beam at 600 feet or less distance from the laser gun. Second, laser false alerts are increasing from cars now using collision avoidance laser products operating at 1,000 pps/1000Hz or laser products used to disengage the vehicle’s cruise control. You will also find laser false alerts at airports with range finders used by air traffic controllers. There are solutions.

There are no federal laws prohibiting the jamming of police laser guns. Some states have banned the use of laser jammers in their state, so check with local or state ordinances. At the Annual Speed Measurement Labs test SML looked at the two leading laser counter measures to see how well they worked, Blinder M47 (4 laser modules), Blinder M27 (two laser modules) and Cheetah M27 Motorcycle Laser Jammer (two motorcycle laser modules). Both are often illegally copied by overseas companies trying to acquire a portion of the market. It’s a compliment to Blinder’s and Cheetah's reputation and performance. Laser transponders need to be mounted in the vehicle grill, equidistant from the headlights to the license plate and concealed. Smaller passenger cars, small SUVs and mini pickup trucks need only 2 laser jammer modules in the front grille, while the larger passenger SUVs and pickup trucks with large grille area need 3 laser modules in the front grille. Vehicles such as Hummer, Ford F350, Chevy 3500HD, Dodge 3500HD are best protected with 4 laser modules in the grille. Some people simply want major protection in the front of the vehicle and will install all 4 laser modules in the front grille. A good laser jammer provides in-cabin warning alerts (audio and or LED) warning of your encounter with a police laser gun.

The Blinder M47 and M27 can be combined with dash mounted radar detectors, such as Passport 9500ix, Bel STi Driver, Escort RedLine, Bel RX65, Bel GX65 and Passport 8500 x50 radar detectors. The M47 laser jammer can also be combined with the Passport 9500ci remote radar detector. Blinder is a stand alone laser jammer for those who already have a radar detector and want laser protection. 1stRadarDetectors (formerly Tiger Lily Products) offers a series of combo radar/laser/photo systems with the best-in-test performance, as verified at Speed Measurement Labs.

To test the jamming efficiency of the Cheetah M27, Blinder M47 and M27 SML used two transmission points of 1,000 and 500 feet and 9 different laser guns, with 162 laser passes during the test. As the test vehicle approached the cone at each distance, they would count down “three, two, one”. At the count of “one”, the officer would trigger the laser gun. SML used a Cheetah M27 attached to a Hayabusa motorcycle and a Blinder M47 installed into the grille of 1stRadarDetectors, Chevy 2500HD truck, a large, dual cab pickup truck with a huge amount of chrome upfront. SML also tested the M27 Blinder on a Mustang GT brought to SML by Blinder USA. El Paso Police Officers were directed to aim the laser at the front license plate of the truck or at the front headlight of the motorcycle. SML used the Kustom Pro Laser III and the LTI Ultralyte LR laser guns, as well as the new TruSpeed laser gun from LTI. There was a total of 9 different laser guns used accounting for 75% of all laser guns sold and used.

The term “jtg" in the test results means JTG (jam to gun) below means the Blinder M27, Blinder M47 or the Cheetah M27 motorcycle laser jammer jammed the laser gun. Both laser guns were in the speed/distance modes. MC below means motorcycle. Chevy below means Chevy 2500HD pickup.

The laser receiver’s location is critical. Blinder’s laser receiver is located where the laser is aimed, on the headlights, bumper or license plate. It does not matter whether the bumper area is a painted surface or chrome surface. If laser strikes the smooth surface in the grille, it will reflect a good signal back to the laser gun. When laser was aimed at the windshield at 500 feet distance, it did not alert. Police rarely aim up in the windshield as the laser signal would go thru the front windshield and out the back windshield. No signal!!! The laser receiver of a laser jammer is installed down where police aim the laser gun…down in the grille area! Conversely, when laser was pointed at the radar detectors mounted up in the windshield, the radar detectors of course alerted to laser. But as discussed above, detecting laser in the windshield does not provide any value to the driver. Laser detection is too late.

In most cases, when laser was aimed at the bumper, especially at 500 feet during this test, the windshield mounted detectors did not alert to laser. The laser beam width at 1,000 feet distance from the laser gun the laser beam is 30-36 inches (≈ 1 meter) wide depending on the laser gun used. Radar detectors can detect laser at 1000 feet distance with beam width of 36 inches; but again, detecting laser serves no value to the driver. At 500 feet distance from the laser gun, the laser beam is only 16-18 inches wide, meaning many detectors did not report the laser beam, as the radar detector could not see the narrow laser beam. The exception here was Adaptiv Technologies’ TPX radar detector, specifically designed for quick connect/dis-connect on nearly any motorcycle. The TPX is mounted on the motorcycle handlebars. A motorcycle is much smaller than a passenger car or truck. As a reminder, detecting laser, even on a motorcycle, is not sufficient to protect you from a laser speeding ticket. Laser gun pulse rates vary: LTI 20/20 is 125 pps, LTI Ultralyte LR is 120pps, LTI TruSpeed is 120pps, Kustom Pro II is 238pps, Kustom Pro III is 200pps, Kustom ProLite is 200pps, Stalker Lidar (LZ1) is 130 pps, Laser Atlanta Speedlaser is 238pps, Laser Atlanta Stealth Dual Pulse is 70pps. The LSID feature eliminates laser false alerts.

SML comments on the 2009 laser jamming test: "We used the same nine laser guns used in the laser reception and reporting test against the Blinder mounted on John’s [Chevy 2500HD] truck, a [Hayabusa] motorcycle, and a Mustang [GT]. We set cones at 1,000 feet and 500 feet. The test vehicle drove at 30 mph. Faster speeds are to the advantage of Blinder. The test vehicle counted down, “three, two, one” at each cone. The officer then fired the laser gun. Graphs are great, but not needed here. In the 162 runs against all lasers at 1,000 ft, and 500 ft. cones, by the truck, the Mustang, and the motorcycle, all with a Blinder mounted, Blinder successfully jammed each laser gun, each time. We are still scratching our heads on how Blinder did it."
